Queen Elizabeth I of England was concerned about the problems in Ireland. She sent her favorite advisor, Sir William Cecil, to manage the Irish affairs. He did a good job and had gotten the Catholic Irish on board. He got rid of some of the more troublesome Protestants and even spoke against King James I for his poor policies towards their countrymen.

This resulted in King James burning him in effigy and even naming him as a traitor and a coward. However, the problem with this quote is that we don’t know if it was Queen Elizabeth’s advisor or king James that said this. The quote originates from the play “The Spanish Tragedy” written by Ben Jonson in 1612.
